Dota 2 Tidehunter Arcana: Maw of the Megalodon Is Here

After a very long wait for a new Arcana, Dota 2 finally has something new for players to chase.

Valve has released the Trove of Terror, a new treasure packed with horror-themed cosmetics, with the new Tidehunter Arcana, Maw of the Megalodon, taking center stage.

But Tidehunter isn’t the only reason this treasure is getting attention. The Trove of Terror also brings back the Drow Ranger Arcana, adds 15 new Immortal sets, and includes two extra rewards for players who open enough treasures.

Trove of Terror Treasure

The Trove of Terror comes with 15 new Immortal sets, featuring heroes like Tiny, Marci, Terrorblade, Pudge, and Legion Commander.

The treasure isn’t just about the new Tidehunter Arcana, either. There are plenty of other cosmetics to chase, with some sets being harder to find than others. Shadow Shaman and Nyx Assassin are Rare drops, while Legion Commander’s set is Very Rare.

So if you’re opening the treasure, those three sets are definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

  • Tiny – Stoneback Sovereign
  • Marci – Patchwork Protector
  • Treant Protector – Creeping Calabash
  • Terrorblade – Rictus Ripper
  • Oracle – Clairvoyant Configuration
  • Primal Beast – Slobbering Strongbox
  • Ancient Apparition – Shattered Sanity
  • Broodmother – Arachnid Anathema
  • Anti-Mage – Daemon Hunter
  • Undying – Direstone Desecration
  • Pudge – Greasepaint Gutbuster
  • Death Prophet – Silken Sibyl
  • Shadow Shaman – Curse of the Wyrmbender
  • Nyx Assassin – Mesmer-Eye
  • Legion Commander – Hell’s Legion

Drow Ranger Arcana – Sepulchral Stalker

The Drow Ranger Arcana, Dread Retribution, is also making a return in the Trove of Terror. This gives players who missed the Arcana when it was originally available another chance to get their hands on it. Along with its dark and icy-themed design, the Arcana comes with its own custom effects, animations, and other cosmetic changes that give Drow Ranger a completely different look in-game.

Tidehunter Arcana – Maw of the Megalodon

The Maw of the Megalodon is the new Tidehunter Arcana, giving the hero a completely different look inspired by one of the sea’s most terrifying creatures. It comes with a new model, custom ability effects, animations, voice lines, and a new taunt, making this much more than a simple cosmetic set. Tidehunter also gets three different styles, giving players even more ways to change his appearance.

12 Treasures – Obscene Eye Ball

Obscene Eye Ball Tormentor cosmetic in Dota 2

Open 12 Trove of Terror treasures to unlock Obscene Eye Ball, a new cosmetic for the Tormentor. It’s a strange-looking addition, but it fits perfectly with the creepy theme of the treasure.

40 Treasures – R’shan the Eternal

At 40 treasures, you unlock R’shan the Eternal, a new Roshan cosmetic that also comes with the Baby R’shan the Eternal courier.

How Much Does the Trove of Terror Cost?

The Trove of Terror isn’t exactly a cheap treasure to open.

A single treasure costs roughly $5 USD, although the exact price can vary depending on your region and Steam pricing.

That becomes pretty expensive if you’re specifically chasing one of the two Arcana rewards.

Opening 12 treasures gets you the Obscene Eye Ball Tormentor reward, while 40 openings unlock R’shan the Eternal and the matching Baby R’shan courier.

And then there’s the big number: 50 treasures.

The Trove of Terror uses escalating odds for its Ultra Rare rewards, and the Bad Luck Protection reaches a guaranteed Ultra Rare at the 50th opening if you haven’t received one before then. Since both the Tidehunter and Drow Ranger Arcanas are Ultra Rare rewards, you aren’t simply paying for a guaranteed Tidehunter Arcana specifically.

At about $5 per treasure, opening 50 can cost roughly $250.

So yeah… getting lucky early is definitely the better outcome.

Is the Trove of Terror Worth Opening?

That really comes down to what you’re looking for.

If you’re a Tidehunter player, the Maw of the Megalodon is probably one of the most interesting cosmetics the hero has received. The new model, effects, animations, and shark-themed styles make it feel like a proper Arcana rather than just another cosmetic set.

The returning Drow Ranger Arcana is also a big deal for anyone who missed it the first time around.

For everyone else, there are still 15 Immortal sets to chase, along with the Tormentor and Roshan rewards.

Just keep in mind that the two Arcanas are Ultra Rare rewards, so getting one isn’t guaranteed early. The treasure also uses escalating odds, with bad-luck protection eventually guaranteeing an Ultra Rare reward on the 50th opening if you haven’t received one before then.

Final Thoughts

The Trove of Terror is a pretty loaded treasure, but there’s no question that the Tidehunter Arcana, Maw of the Megalodon, is the main attraction. The returning Drow Ranger Arcana gives the treasure another big draw, while the Immortal sets and milestone rewards give players plenty of other cosmetics to chase.

Whether it’s worth opening really comes down to what you’re after. If you’re mainly hunting for the Tidehunter Arcana, remember that the Ultra Rare drops are still luck-based, so the cost can add up quickly.
