Was Gecko Moria Actually Kozuki Moria?

Moria The Shadow Master

One Piece isn’t just about devil fruits and pirate fights. Some characters stick in your head for how weird, scary, or downright crazy they are. Gecko Moria is one of those.

  • First Appearance: Luffy’s first encounter with Moria was unforgettable — a huge, hulking figure stealing shadows and raising zombies on Thriller Bark.
  • Notable Meeting: Moria also crossed paths with Bartholomew Kuma at Thriller Bark, which hinted at bigger powers and alliances beyond the Shichibukai system.
  • Bounty: 320,000,000 Berries — a number that makes sense for a guy who ruled an entire floating island with an army of zombies.

His Weird But Loyal Crew

Moria doesn’t roll solo. His crew is as bizarre as he is:

  • Absalom – The creepy stalker who somehow becomes loyal.
  • Dr. Hogback – Mad scientist behind the zombies.
  • Perona – Ghost girl with style and brains.

Kozuki Moria was a Hero of Wano?

The latest chapters brought a surprise: the Kozuki family has a Moria of their own. In the 1154 cover story, we get a sneak peek at a “hero” named Kozuki Moria. Chapters 1157 and 1158 hint that he’s active in Wano’s fight, making fans wonder if there’s a symbolic link between him and Gecko Moria — maybe the shadow legacy continues.

Moria Goes to Hachinosu to Save Absalom

Meanwhile, Gecko Moria tried rescuing Absalom in Hachinosu. Things went sideways when Shiryu got the fruit, and that’s the last we see of Moria. Perona tried to free him, so he’s probably still alive — most likely locked up by Blackbeard for now.

Moria vs. Kaido – A Clash in Ringo

Approximately 23 years ago, Gecko Moria and his crew clashed with Kaido and the Beasts Pirates in the Ringo region of Wano Country (as briefly shown in Episode 971). This was the time Oden was still alive and dancing shamelessly in Wano. The battle was intense, but ultimately, Kaido emerged victorious. Most of Moria’s crew was lost, leaving him traumatized and explaining why he later avoids maintaining a full crew.

Why Moria is Still Cool

Moria isn’t just strong — he’s smart, unpredictable, and his devil fruit makes him insanely versatile. Add a loyal, quirky crew, and you get a character who still matters, even if he’s off the main stage. With the new Kozuki Moria showing up, the shadow legacy might continue in Wano in ways fans didn’t expect.

Final Thoughts

Gecko Moria might not be front and center anymore, but he’s one of the most memorable antiheroes in One Piece. Creepy, clever, and able to manipulate shadows like nobody else, his next move — or the connection with Kozuki Moria — could shake Hachinosu and the New World.
